You'll barely get started on Stage 1 against the Mindless Ones, when Dormammu pops up to hurl a Fireball at you. Sidestep it, and keep moving on.
You'll get to the first of the path-blocking spikes, and Dormammu will pop up alongside the path, furthest from the screen, causing a magic blast that summons a wave of Astral Imps. Don't be standing on that side of the path, and you'll be fine. When you encounter the first Fire Giants in the level, hang waaaay back. Dormammu will show up behind them and direct magic on the floor. Anyone in range will turn into a Mindless One and start dancing, but if you can stay far enough back, you can swoop in once your enemies are dancing and clear a bunch out. The end stage is a large platform with Mindless Ones and a few Fire Giants, and Dormammu will move from side to side to throw Fireballs across it, occasionally showing up in the back to turn anyone standing on the Don't Stand Here Circles into dancing Mindless Ones for a few moments. |
Dormammu is a challenging Mission with an extremely challenging boss. Not for those looking for an easy Adamantium or a sleepwalk game. It's a longer Mission as well. Taking place in Dormammu's home, the Dark Dimension, the levels are saturated with hoards of Mindless Ones, waves of star fodder Astral Imps, and occasional interspersing Fire Giants. The Mindless Ones aren't too bad. Just remember that purple = melee, green = ranged, and red = melee with the ability to stun you. And Dormammu himself frequently pops into hit you with fire or dark magic, 'lest you get too comfortable. You travel from spot to spot via portals hovering in the air, and they occasionally blend in somewhat, so watch well for those. |
Dormammu as a boss is tough. He's fast, his vocal cues don't give you a lot of reaction time, and he can hit the whole stage, easily, with more than one attack.
When his health hits a quarter down, and then again when it hits just under half, he'll disappear from the arena and a bunch of Mindless Ones will show up. Dormammu actually appears on each side of the stage to throw Fireballs, then in the back to throw three of them. After this, he appears back on the stage as attackable. Be especially mindful when fighting of his Flame Wave and Flame Blasts attacks. Flame Wave is a triangle that looks like it's heading away in front of him, but it can hit behind him first too. And Flame Blasts beams sweep the whole half of the stage he's facing, but you can jump over them. After his health reaches the half point, he'll pull out his devastating AoE Inferno attack. |
Stage 2 is more of the same, with clusters of Mindless Ones everywhere, occasional Fire Giants, and Astral Imp waves. Always be vigilant for Dormammu to pop up and try to wreck your day. the fireballs he throws are fairly easy to dodge, but he moves quickly when it comes to the sudden magic blasts, and it's sometimes hard to avoid those. As soon as you get past the first path block in Stage 2, he starts throwing handfuls of fireballs at you. Past the first Portal to the next area, and he pops up repeatedly beside the path to summon Imps with painful magic blasts. Through the next portal is a stage where he turns people into dancing Mindless Ones again. Fireball dodging, magic wave dodging, rinse and repeat. End of the Stage is the same as Stage 1 was. |
Attacks and Cues
When he says "Flame Bolt." - Throws a dodgeable fireball at someone
When he says "Now You are the Mindless One" - Throws a dodgeable handful of magic at someone. If it hits, they become a dancing Mindless One for several moments.
When he says "Hex Prison" - A pattern of Do Not Stand Here circles will appear on the floor, then fill with magic. Touching it stuns you.
When he says "Flame Blasts" - He does an elaborate arm swirl with both arms, then extends them out to the sides. He emits beams from both hands that reach the edges of the stage, which he then sweeps end to meet as one huge beam. You can dodge this attack by either being behind him, or jumping over the beams.
When he says "You Can't Attack Me" - A large colorful cone of magic surrounds him and shields him for several moments. This seems most common when he's being attacked by a melee hero.
When he says "Flame Wave" - He extends his arm, as a large triangle of flame appears on the floor in front of him. It'll do heavy damage to anyone it touches, and it does hit behind him before it moves away from him and across the stage.
When he says "Inferno" - This is his biggest attack, which he doesn't bring out until he's halfway down his health. It's an AoE attack with a good range around him, and heavy damage.
Playing Tips
- Always watch for Dormammu to pop up in Stage 1 and 2! His attacks then are all dodgeable, if you watch for them and move fast.
- Staying behind Dormammu is the best way to dodge most of his attacks, except his Flame Wave.
- Ranged is best! Melee fighters have a rough time dodging, trigger his shield, and are very susceptible to his Inferno attack
- Take advantage of the Mindless ones that spawn twice during the battle. Since Dormammu's fireballs are dodgeable, use the minions to grab much needed healing.
